The Adventure Begins!

Hey y'all! This is Hannah Hiatt, and I'll be serving as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Brazil São Paulo South Mission for the next eighteen months. I report to the Provo MTC (*cough cough* darn slow visa) on November 7th (that's tomorrow!), and I'm super excited. This blog is where I'll post pictures and stories of my adventures.

Semana 62: Scripture Power

This week I went on splits with another dupla, and it was pretty awesome. I spent the day with Sister Coyago, who is from Ecuador (which is cool because in one half of the country water flushes clockwise and in the other it flushes counterclockwise. Sister Coyago lives slightly to the north of the equator, in the mountain-y part of the country). She's pretty cool and we met some awesome people that they'll baptize soon. This week we met a guy who has become my new favorite person. You know when you're doing mission prep and you're teaching a bad actor with a lot of deep questions that just happen to be answerable with the scriptures and a firm testimony of the gospel? Turns out people like that truly do exist and we met one of them. So we got to exercise our scripture-chase muscles, and in the end he really understood and had a profound desire to go to church. Week 48: You say Goodbye, I say Hello

This week has been one of goodbyes, and also of hellos. Today I was transfered and I've been saying goodbye to a lot of friends, but I'm also eager to get to know new faces too. Goodbye Sister Larsen, our roommate and STL who went home to Utah after serving the Lord 18 months faithfully and diligently. Hello Sister Sales, the novinha of Sister Larsen, who was my roommate a while back. She will be my new companion and I'm super excited because she's awesome! Goodbye Sister Medrano, who has been my companion and amiga for about three months. Week 19: In Which There Are Miracles

So I mentioned last week that I got a new companion, and I would like to take a little more time this week to introduce her. Her name is Sister K. Souza from Mato Grosso, Brasil, and she is actually an angel. Seriously. Like, if you crossed Mary Poppins with Jesus Christ and made the child Brazilian, you'd get my companion. She's awesome. She's a Sister Training Leader, which means sometimes she goes on splits (trades companions for a day) to help and teach the other Sister missionaries improve. This is awesome because it means I a) have an expert for my companion (of course, she's super humble and always denies it: "There's always more to learn") and b) get to meet other Sisters, too, which is always fun.
