Week 8: Eu Não Falo Português.... (muito bem)

So it´s been about two weeks in Brasil now, and boy-oh-boy it´s been a time. A good time, of course, but there have been some things to get used to. Like the language, for example. Fun fact: the people in Brasil speak Portuguese (also the keyboards are slightly different so please forgive any weird punctuation). And not only do they speak Portuguese, but they speak it quickly and about lots of different things using about a billion different words and the´re strung so tightly together that by the time you remember what the first word means they've finished the sentence. I've definitely been learning, though, and now I sometimes actually understand the gist of what people are saying. I have learned some new phrases, though. If you are ever invited to lunch in Brasil, try some of these phrases: Eu não estou com muito fome ~ I am starving* Apenas um poco mais ~ Pile it on, please Desculpa, estou cheia! ~ I haven´t eaten in a week, please give me more food Se eu como um outro

Week 7: Thank You for Choosing Brasil for Your Upcoming Trip!

(You have been subscribed to <Sister Hiatt´s Mission Emails>. For more information about this trip, click here . To unsubscribe, respond unsubscribe. ) Thank you for choosing Riberão Pires, Sao Paulo, Brasil for your upcoming trip! We hope you will enjoy your experience. Here in Brasil you will be treated to dazzling sunsets, delicious food, and vibrant culture. You will be sure to enjoy the gorgeous colors on the houses, and the energy of the people who live in them. Here the people are so kind, perfect strangers will offer you jackfruit (and they´re so kind, they won´t let you say no!). You can see children frolicking everywhere, and for a kid growing up in Brasil, a kite is a necessity. Join the birds with your very own kite! In your United States, do you have roads that run at a 45 degree angle? No? Here, we have whole neighborhoods of fun, steep hills to play on. And of course, the food is so good that even vegetarians will eagerly join the churrascões and never look bac

Week 6: Tcau tcau, Irmao!

Image
Meu Districto (que inclui nosso professoro, Irmao Haymore) Hey everyone! I've finished my six weeks at the MTC up here in Provo, Utah, and now it's time to vroom vroom all the way to Sao Paulo, Brazil, where I'll spend the next 17ish months. I'ts been such a good week but I don't have time to tell y'all about it, so stay tuned. I won't say I'm ready but I'm excited for the next adventure, and I know it'll be a good experience. The Elders in my district are SUPER amazing, and I'm really going to miss them. They're going to do awesome things in Brazil and Boston (and California, for a transfer). Also Sister Christensen (who is actually coming with us, switching to the Brazil MTC) and Sister Petersen. The people here are all so nice and the Spirit is always so strong, and I hope I never forget the things I've learned here. Pretty lights (and Elders too... they're okay I guess) I'm sorry, I need to go like right now or

Week 5: In Which I Receive Travel Plans

Sister Jones got us matching necklaces! They say, "Choose Joy." Isn't she the sweetest? If you'd prefer not to receive these emails every week, or if you know someone else who would like to receive them, let me know and I'll update my email list. You can also follow the story on www.sisterhiattsadventures.blogspot.com Hey y'all! How has your week been? I'm definitely getting used to life at the MTC, and I've gotten so close with the people here. I'm so grateful to have this opportunity, and especially to go to Brazil to keep teaching and serving. Speaking of which, I still haven't heard about my visa directly, but we received our travel plans this week, so presumably we're in the clear! Two other Elders and I will be flying to Georgia and then directly to Sao Paulo next Monday. Crazy, right? I've learned a ton but honestly I don't feel even a little ready. It'll be good, though. Hopefully. Sister Jones and me living i

Week 4: In Which I Attend a Rave and Mosh to Silent Night

Image
Hey y'all! How was your week? Mine was awesome, though not nearly as eventful as last time. There were four of us in our room this week (Sister Miller, Sister Moulton, Sister Jones, and me) and we had a fun service battle. It started when Sister Miller and Sister Moulton went early to the temple and we changed the sheets on their beds. When they got back and saw what we had done, though, they decided to leave mint hearts on our beds. So naturally we had to retaliate with some pickup lines and affirmations of affection. It's so wonderful being here and I really love the people I've gotten to meet. Sister Miller and Sister Moulton left for Brazil and Portugal, respectively, and it's going to be really quiet without them. I'm really going to miss them, but I know they're going to do amazing things. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! (also, to the guy whose socks we stole: sorry...  (we did give them back (eventually))) Sister Jones' fami
