Week 44: We Thank Thee O God For a Prophet

You know that time when Jesus visited the Americas? You know, right after he was resurrected but before he returned to Jerusalem? He taught them the doctrine of salvation and called apostles and administered the sacrament and cured the sick and diseased. And then he called the children forth and blessed them one by one. When he finally ascended into the skies to return to the Middle East, the people cried and wanted him to stay. But he said that he passed his authority to the apostles he called and that they would continue to minister unto them.

Christ didn't come to Brasil this week (at least, not in the body), but he sent his representative: the prophet and president of his church, along with one of the apostles. We had the privilege to hear from President Nelson.

When he got to the pulpit he asked for all of the children to stand up, and for them to sing "I am a Child of God." He then explained how important it is that we know (and believe) in this. We are literally children of our Heavenly Father and we have divine potential. Here on earth we have two goals that He will help us to achieve: immortality (living forever) and eternal life (living with God forever and becoming like Him). Christ came to earth and made it possible for us to achieve each goal. He died and was resurrected, and because of this each one of us will receive a resurrected body after we die. That's the easy part. The second is a little more complicated.

God wants each and every one of us to return to live in His presence, but each time we sin, we become unable to return to him. "Nothing impure can enter the kingdom of God," so He sent Christ to save us from sin, too. The problem is, we can't receive the blessings of His grace without using our agency to accept them. He wants us to try to learn how to keep the commandments and partake of the sacrament every week to accept his sacrifice and se tornar um pouco mais puro.

[...become a little more pure. I know that as we strive to keep the commandments and become more Christlike, we can hope to live with God one day and inherit all the glory of Him. I know that President Neslon is the prophet of God living here on earth, and that he has God-given authority to lead the church of Jesus Christ. I know this is His Church, and the only true and living church on the face of the earth.]

Amo vocês! [I love you!]
