Semana 63: Chá das Sisters

So sharp observers will notice that this email was sent on Tuesday and not, in fact, on Monday. No, this is not fubecagem, I promise. It's because yesterday in our mission all of the Sisters were invited to a special conference that lasted for the whole day. There we learned about politeness and graciousness and stuff like that, and how we can be better missionaries and better people.

The thing about the mission is that you have to focus completely on it if you want to have success. I think that in pretty much any other activity or occupation it's fine if you practice it a little bit each day, or pass 8 hours working. That's enough to get it done. But here on the mission, if we want to have success, we need to focus every second of every day for a year and a half. We don't watch TV, we don't use the internet (aside from emails and stuff), and each day we try to spread the gospel in everything we do. Now obviously we aren't perfect and we spend a lot of time, unfortunately, talking and thinking about things that don't relate to Christ. But when we give our all to Him and do everything that He wants us to do, He will bless us immensely. We will feel more joy and more faith, and we will be able to find the people who are ready to accept the restored gospel.

Every once in a while it gets really difficult to focus on the mission. It's really easy to let the mind wander back home or meander to the future, or to get stressed out and not devote all my attention to the work of the Lord. We read the story of Maria and Martha when Christ was visiting them. Martha was trying to do everything for the Lord-- she started cooking and cleaning so that Jesus would feel comfortable, and she got a little stressed out and frustrated that Maria didn't help her. She was trying her best but wasn't getting the results she wanted. And so Jesus explained that in that situation, it was better to leave the temporal things for another moment and just listen to Him teach, like Maria was doing. When we are nurtured by His words, we will be capable to do everything that He wants us to do. But when we're prideful and want to do our own thing, and try to do a million things at once, we will never have success, nor will we feel good. So it's a loving invitation that He extends to us, to learn of Him and listen to His words, and we will as a result have peace.

I'm so grateful for this gospel and for the opportunity to learn and to repent, and for the hope we have to return to God one day and rest from all our worries and cares. If we give everything to Him while we are here in this mortal probation, we will be able to inherit all that He has.

Love you guys
Sister Hiatt
